About the Workshop

Get the skills, knowledge and confidence to build your own unique automata. You can sign up for the FULL COURSE or individual modules separately (see listings for individual modules on workshop page). Introduction: Module 1: Simple mechanisms (September 15 + 29) Module 2: Jumping mechanisms (October 13 + November 3) Module 3: Waves mechanisms (November 24 + December 8) Module 4: Crankshaft mechanism (January 5 + 19, 2025) Module 5: Advanced Automata with gears, sound/musical instruments and electricity (February 2, 16, March 2) Module 6: Final project (March 16, March 30, April 13) At the first session of each module, you will learn the techniques. Between sessions you will construct a prototype and present it at the second session. In the final module, students will work on a final project that combines the different mechanisms that they have learned. There are a total of 14 sessions (each session will be 2 hours) which meet on Zoom from 7-9 p.m. Central European Time. During the first half hour of each sessions, students can ask questions about the progress of their projects and share ideas with each other. All sessions will be recorded in case someone is not able to attend live. The course will be taught by Mirek Trejtnar, expert woodcarver, toymaker and automata builder. You will get regular consultations at this highly individualized course. You will also see the work of fellow students throughout the course. FOR WHOM IS THE WORKSHOP INTENDED? CANCELLATION POLICY The fee is nonrefundable. If you cancel a more than 1 month before the start of the workshop, you can transfer the fee to another PIP workshop. If for any reason PIP needs to cancel the course, you will get a full refund.
