About the Workshop

In the past, many of our students visited the home of Alena Vorlova, the owner of one of the largest Czech private puppet collections, who is in her 90s. What happened to her collection? How do private collections play a role in the preservation of Czech puppet culture? Find out about the 4 museums in the Czech Republic with permanent collections, and how private collections have played a fundamental role in their development. We are thrilled to have guests Marie Jirasková and Pavel Jirasek, authors of the award-winning book "Puppets and the Modern" and several other books about the overlap of art and Czech puppetry, to discuss this topic with us. Marie and Pavel, who have worked extensively with Alena Vorlová, have one of the most impressive private puppet collections of their own which they exhibit all over the country. Marie is a scene designer and artist who teaches at the Janacek Academy of Performing Arts in Brno. Her husband, Pavel, is an author and documentary film director and a leading expert in puppet history who teaches at Masaryk University in Brno. You can also take this workshop by paying the one-off fee, or can you sign up for one of our subscriptions: Puppet Recipes (for three months) or Golden Czech Hands (one-year; gives you access to past Puppet Recipe workshops).
